Equipment

  • Air fryer Preheat to 400°F (200°C)
  • 3 shallow bowls or plates For the breading stations
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Fork or whisk For beating the eggs
  • Kitchen tongs For flipping rings without scraping coating
  • Wire cooling rack Optional, for resting cooked rings
  • Paper towels For drying onions and draining

Ingredients

  • 2 large yellow onions about 400-500g total
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour about 120g
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs about 50g, Kikkoman recommended
  • 0.5 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • cooking spray avocado or olive oil spray recommended

For Serving (Optional)

  • ranch dressing for dipping
  • ketchup for dipping
  • bang bang sauce for dipping
  • honey mustard sauce for dipping
  • barbecue sauce for dipping

Instructions

  • Peel onions and slice crosswise into ½-inch thick rings. Separate into individual rings and pat dry with paper towels.
  • In first bowl, mix flour with salt, garlic powder, and cayenne. In second bowl, beat eggs. In third bowl, add panko breadcrumbs.
  • Coat each ring in seasoned flour, then dip in egg wash, then press firmly into panko until fully covered. Spray both sides lightly with cooking spray.
  • Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3-5 minutes. Lightly spray the basket with cooking spray.
  • Arrange breaded rings in a single layer in the basket, do not overlap. Air fry at 400°F for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  • Transfer cooked rings to a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Dry onions thoroughly: Moisture prevents the coating from sticking. Pat rings dry with paper towels before breading.
  • Don't skip the cooking spray: A light oil coating helps panko brown and crisp up in the air fryer.
  • Cook in a single layer: Overlapping rings trap steam and create soggy spots. Cook in batches if needed.
  • Press panko firmly: Gently press breadcrumbs onto both sides with your fingers so the coating adheres tightly.
  • Make-ahead option: Breaded rings can be refrigerated on a baking sheet for up to 2 hours before air frying.
  • Freezing uncooked rings: Freeze breaded rings in a single layer on a baking sheet for 1-2 hours, then transfer to a freezer bag. Cook from frozen at 400°F for 14-16 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • Reheating leftovers: Reheat cooked rings in the air fryer at 375°F for 3-5 minutes. Do not microwave.
  • Sweet onion variation: Substitute Vidalia or other sweet onions for a milder, sweeter flavor.
  • Gluten-free option: Use a 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose flour blend and gluten-free panko breadcrumbs.
