Instructions
Peel onions and slice crosswise into ½-inch thick rings. Separate into individual rings and pat dry with paper towels.
In first bowl, mix flour with salt, garlic powder, and cayenne. In second bowl, beat eggs. In third bowl, add panko breadcrumbs.
Coat each ring in seasoned flour, then dip in egg wash, then press firmly into panko until fully covered. Spray both sides lightly with cooking spray.
Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3-5 minutes. Lightly spray the basket with cooking spray.
Arrange breaded rings in a single layer in the basket, do not overlap. Air fry at 400°F for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
Transfer cooked rings to a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
Dry onions thoroughly: Moisture prevents the coating from sticking. Pat rings dry with paper towels before breading.
Don't skip the cooking spray: A light oil coating helps panko brown and crisp up in the air fryer.
Cook in a single layer: Overlapping rings trap steam and create soggy spots. Cook in batches if needed.
Press panko firmly: Gently press breadcrumbs onto both sides with your fingers so the coating adheres tightly.
Make-ahead option: Breaded rings can be refrigerated on a baking sheet for up to 2 hours before air frying.
Freezing uncooked rings: Freeze breaded rings in a single layer on a baking sheet for 1-2 hours, then transfer to a freezer bag. Cook from frozen at 400°F for 14-16 minutes, flipping halfway.
Reheating leftovers: Reheat cooked rings in the air fryer at 375°F for 3-5 minutes. Do not microwave.
Sweet onion variation: Substitute Vidalia or other sweet onions for a milder, sweeter flavor.
Gluten-free option: Use a 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose flour blend and gluten-free panko breadcrumbs.
