Equipment

  • Toaster or toaster oven
  • Sharp bread knife For slicing the bagel
  • Butter knife or small spreading knife For spreading cream cheese
  • Plate For serving
  • Cutting board (optional)

Ingredients

  • 1 bagel any flavor: plain, sesame, everything, cinnamon raisin, or whole wheat
  • 2-3 tablespoons cream cheese regular, low-fat, or flavored; about 30–45g

Optional Toppings

  • 2-3 slices smoked salmon optional; wild-caught recommended
  • 2-3 slices fresh tomato optional; thinly sliced
  • red onion optional; thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon capers optional
  • fresh dill optional; to taste
  • black pepper optional; to taste
  • everything bagel seasoning optional; to taste

Instructions

  • Place the bagel flat on a cutting board and use a sharp serrated knife to carefully slice it in half horizontally, aiming for two even halves. Skip this step if your bagel is pre-sliced.
  • Place both bagel halves cut-side in the toaster and toast on medium heat for 2–3 minutes until the edges are lightly golden. In a toaster oven, place cut-side up and toast for 3–4 minutes; watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • While the bagel toasts, remove cream cheese from the refrigerator and let it sit for 2–3 minutes to soften, or microwave for 5–10 seconds. Stir briefly with a knife to make it smooth and spreadable.
  • Place toasted bagel halves cut-side up on a plate, then use a butter knife to spread 2–3 tablespoons of cream cheese per half, starting from the center and working outward to the edges in smooth, even strokes.
  • Layer on any desired toppings such as smoked salmon, fresh tomato slices, thinly sliced red onion, capers, fresh dill, black pepper, or everything bagel seasoning. Press toppings gently into the cream cheese so they stick.
  • Serve open-faced or as a sandwich, and slice in half for easier eating if desired. Enjoy immediately while the bagel is still warm.

Notes

  • Use room temperature cream cheese for the easiest spreading — cold cream cheese can tear the bagel surface.
  • For extra smooth spreading, run your butter knife under hot water before scooping the cream cheese.
  • Don't over-toast: a lightly golden bagel keeps its signature chewy interior while adding a satisfying crunch.
  • Choose fresh bagels when possible — day-old bagels can be revived by toasting, but fresh ones have the best texture.
  • For a really crispy bagel, toast twice on a lower setting.
  • Store bagels in a paper bag at room temperature for up to 2 days, or slice and freeze for up to 3 months. Do not refrigerate — it speeds up staling.
  • Cream cheese keeps tightly sealed in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks after opening; do not leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
  • To toast from frozen, place bagel halves directly in the toaster and add 1–2 extra minutes to toasting time.
  • Try flavored cream cheese varieties — chive, vegetable, honey walnut, or strawberry — for an easy upgrade.
  • Assemble bagels fresh for best results; if making ahead, wrap tightly and refrigerate for up to 4 hours (bagel may soften slightly).
