This homemade Chick-fil-A sauce is a creamy, smoky, tangy copycat of the iconic restaurant dipping sauce — and it comes together in just five minutes with five simple pantry ingredients. A blend of mayonnaise, honey, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, and smoky barbecue sauce creates that signature golden sauce that tastes remarkably close to the real thing. Perfect for dipping chicken tenders, nuggets, fries, and wraps, this versatile condiment keeps in the fridge for up to two weeks and is endlessly customizable to suit your taste.

Equipment

  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Whisk or fork
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Airtight glass jar or container For storage
  • Rubber spatula For scraping the bowl clean

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise 120g; full-fat classic mayonnaise recommended
  • 2 tablespoons honey 30ml; raw honey preferred; microwave 10-15 seconds if crystallized
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard 30ml
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 15ml
  • 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce 30ml; smoky-style BBQ sauce strongly recommended
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 5ml; optional, for extra brightness; fresh preferred over bottled

Instructions

  • Measure out all ingredients — mayonnaise, honey, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, barbecue sauce, and lemon juice (if using) — and set them on the counter before you begin. Accurate measurements keep the flavor balance on point.
  • Spoon 1/2 cup of full-fat mayonnaise into a medium mixing bowl, using a rubber spatula to scrape every last bit from the measuring cup. The mayo forms the creamy base of the sauce, so getting the full amount is important.
  • Pour 2 tablespoons of honey over the mayonnaise. If your honey has crystallized, microwave it in its jar for 10-15 seconds to loosen it before measuring.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of yellow mustard and 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard to the bowl. Using both mustards is key — yellow brings mild tang while Dijon adds a sharper, more complex depth.
  • Spoon in 2 tablespoons of smoky-style barbecue sauce. Avoid sweet or spicy varieties — the smokiness is what gives this sauce its signature depth.
  • If using, add 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice to the bowl. This optional step brightens the overall flavor and lifts the richness of the mayonnaise slightly.
  • Whisk all ingredients together vigorously for 1-2 minutes until the sauce is completely smooth, uniform in color (a warm golden-orange), and creamy in texture. Taste and adjust sweetness, smokiness, or tang as desired.
  • Transfer the sauce to a serving bowl or an airtight jar. Serve immediately at room temperature, or refrigerate for 30 minutes for a thicker, cooler version. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  • Use full-fat mayonnaise for the richest, creamiest result. Light or low-fat mayo will produce a thinner sauce.
  • A smoky-style BBQ sauce is essential. Sweet BBQ sauce will push the flavor toward plain honey mustard and lose the signature depth.
  • Let the sauce chill in the fridge for at least 20-30 minutes before serving — the flavors meld and noticeably improve.
  • For a spicy version, stir in 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • For a lighter version, substitute half the mayonnaise with plain full-fat Greek yogurt to reduce calories while keeping creaminess.
  • For a vegan version, use plant-based mayonnaise and substitute honey with agave nectar.
  • The sauce keeps in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Do not freeze — the mayo base will separate upon thawing.
  • Always use a clean spoon when scooping from the storage jar to maximize shelf life and prevent contamination.
  • Making it a day ahead is recommended when serving for a party — the overnight rest in the fridge gives the best flavor results.
  • Double or triple the batch easily — it scales perfectly and stores just as well in larger quantities.
