Equipment

  • 6-quart slow cooker
  • Cooking spray
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 6 cups apples about 900g, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar 100g
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice 15ml, freshly squeezed

For the Topping

  • 1 box yellow cake mix 15.25 oz or 432g, dry
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter 113g, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans 60g, optional

For Serving

  • vanilla ice cream optional

Instructions

  • Spray the inside of your 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until apples are evenly coated.
  • Pour the apple mixture into the prepared slow cooker and spread evenly across the bottom.
  • Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the apples, ensuring complete coverage. Do not stir.
  • Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the cake mix, then sprinkle with chopped pecans if using.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 3 hours, or until apples are tender and the top is golden brown.
  • Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • Don't stir the layers - the "dump" method works best when everything stays separate during cooking.
  • For a crispier topping, place a paper towel under the slow cooker lid during the last 30 minutes to absorb moisture.
  • Granny Smith apples provide tartness while Honeycrisp adds sweetness - use a combination for best flavor.
  • Spice cake mix or cinnamon swirl cake mix makes an excellent variation on the classic yellow cake.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 30-45 seconds.
  • You can substitute walnuts for pecans or omit nuts entirely for a nut-free version.
  • For a caramel apple version, drizzle caramel sauce over the apples before adding the cake mix.
  • This recipe doubles easily for potlucks - just use a larger slow cooker and increase cooking time by 30-60 minutes.
  • Fresh or frozen apple pie filling (2 cans, 21 oz each) can replace fresh apples for an even quicker version.
  • The dessert is done when edges are bubbling and the top has a golden, cake-like texture.
