Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce

iamwinfred
This homemade hot fudge sauce is silky, rich, and deeply chocolatey in a way that makes store-bought versions taste flat by comparison. Ready in under 15 minutes using pantry staples, it's perfect for drizzling over ice cream, stirring into coffee, or eating straight from the spoon.

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan For gently heating and combining ingredients
  • Whisk Essential for keeping the mixture smooth
  • Silicone spatula Helps scrape down sides and prevent burning
  • Measuring cups and spoons For accurate proportions
  • Heat-resistant glass jar Perfect for storage
  • Instant-read thermometer (optional) Helpful for precision

Ingredients

  • ½ cup heavy cream 120ml
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 170g
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 42g
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar 50g
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 5ml
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup optional, prevents crystallization and adds shine

Instructions

  • Measure out all ingredients before you start cooking. Set out your saucepan, whisk, and spatula within easy reach.
  • Pour the heavy cream into your medium saucepan and add the granulated sugar. Place over medium heat and whisk occasionally until small bubbles form around the edges, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat. Add all the chocolate chips and butter pieces. Let sit undisturbed for 2 minutes, then whisk vigorously until completely melted and smooth.
  • Add the vanilla extract, salt, and corn syrup if using. Whisk thoroughly to distribute all the flavorings evenly until the sauce is glossy and homogeneous.
  • Return the saucepan to low heat if the sauce is too thick. Whisk in 1-2 tablespoons of heavy cream to thin it, or cook 1-2 minutes more to thicken. Keep it slightly thinner than desired final consistency.
  • Pour the hot fudge sauce into your heat-resistant storage container. Let it cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then seal and transfer to the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Use quality chocolate: The better your chocolate, the better your sauce will taste.
  • Don't rush the melting: Let the chocolate sit in the hot cream before whisking to prevent overheating.
  • Whisk thoroughly: This incorporates air and creates a smoother, glossier texture.
  • Watch your heat: Too high and the chocolate can seize; keep it medium to low.
  • Adjust sweetness: Taste before storing and add more sugar if needed.
  • Prevent skin formation: Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface before refrigerating.
  • Reheat gently: Use low power in the microwave or a double boiler to prevent scorching.
  • Stir while reheating: This ensures even warming and maintains smooth consistency.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Variations: Try peppermint, espresso, salted caramel, bourbon, orange, cinnamon, dark chocolate, white chocolate, Nutella, or coconut fudge variations.
