Mocha Hot Chocolate Recipe

Mocha Hot Chocolate

iamwinfred
This Mocha Hot Chocolate brings together the best of both worlds: creamy, velvety hot chocolate with a bold coffee kick. Real cocoa powder and semi-sweet chocolate chips create incredible depth, while freshly brewed espresso adds a sophisticated edge that regular hot chocolate just can't match. Ready in just 15 minutes with simple pantry ingredients, it tastes like something you'd pay premium prices for at a coffee shop.

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan 3-4 quart capacity
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Coffee maker or espresso machine
  • Serving mugs

Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk 946ml
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder about 30g
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar about 67g, adjust to taste
  • 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips about 45g
  • 1/2 cup freshly brewed espresso 120ml, or strong coffee
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • salt pinch
  • whipped cream optional, for topping
  • chocolate shavings optional, for garnish

Instructions

  • Brew 1/2 cup of strong espresso or double-strength coffee and keep it warm.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until no clumps remain.
  • Pour the milk into a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until small bubbles form around the edges and steam rises (about 5-7 minutes). Do not boil.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and gradually add the cocoa-sugar mixture, about 2 tablespoons at a time, whisking continuously until completely dissolved and smooth.
  • Add the chocolate chips and whisk constantly until melted completely, about 2-3 minutes, until the mixture is thick and velvety.
  • Slowly pour in the brewed espresso while whisking, then add the vanilla extract and whisk until fully combined. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  • Remove from heat, ladle into serving mugs, and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings if desired. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Use fresh espresso for the best flavor; stale coffee creates a bitter, flat taste.
  • Never boil the milk, as it changes the protein structure and creates an unpleasant texture.
  • Whisk constantly to prevent lumps and achieve a smooth, professional texture.
  • Quality cocoa powder matters; cheap cocoa tastes chalky and lacks depth.
  • For less sweetness, reduce sugar to 2-3 tablespoons and use dark chocolate chips (70%+ cocoa).
  • Warm your mugs with hot water before serving, then empty and dry them.
  • If lumps form, strain through a fine-mesh sieve before serving.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat on the stovetop over medium-low heat, whisking frequently.
  • Make-ahead: prepare the chocolate-milk base without espresso, refrigerate, then add fresh espresso when reheating.
  • For a vegan version, use oat, almond, or soy milk and vegan chocolate chips.
