Instructions
Measure out milk, Nutella, cocoa powder, sugar, and vanilla extract. Preheat serving mugs by rinsing with hot water.
Pour milk into a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Warm slowly, stirring occasionally, until small bubbles form around the edges. Do not boil.
Reduce heat to low and add Nutella. Whisk constantly for about 2 minutes until completely melted and smooth with no lumps.
Sprinkle cocoa powder, sugar, and a pinch of salt over the mixture. Whisk vigorously for about 1 minute until silky smooth. Taste and adjust sweetness.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Whisk once more to combine. If using a milk frother, froth for 10-15 seconds for extra creaminess.
Pour into preheated mugs. Top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, crushed hazelnuts, and a drizzle of Nutella. Serve immediately.
Notes
Use whole milk for maximum creaminess, but oat milk or almond milk work well too.
Don't overheat the milk or it can develop an unpleasant skin and cooked flavor.
Whisk constantly when adding Nutella to prevent it from clumping at the bottom.
Adjust sweetness gradually since Nutella is already quite sweet.
Preheat your mugs with hot water to keep the drink warmer longer.
Fresh Nutella works best as older jars can become stiff and harder to incorporate.
Add a tiny pinch of espresso powder to intensify the chocolate flavor without adding coffee taste.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Do not freeze.
Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat, whisking constantly, or in the microwave in 30-second intervals.
For a party, scale up the recipe and keep warm in a slow cooker on low, whisking occasionally. Set up a hot chocolate bar with various toppings.
