Equipment

  • Citrus juicer Handheld or electric
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cocktail shaker Or mason jar with lid
  • Margarita glasses Or any wide-rimmed glasses
  • Small shallow plate For salt rimming
  • Sharp knife and cutting board
  • Fine-mesh strainer (optional) for pulp-free drinks

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh lime juice About 6-8 limes; freshly squeezed strongly recommended
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice About 2 oranges; freshly squeezed
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup Adjust to taste; see notes for how to make
  • 2 cups ice cubes Plus extra for serving glasses
  • 2 tablespoons coarse sea salt For rimming glasses
  • 1 lime Sliced, for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons agave nectar (optional) for extra sweetness
  • 1 cup sparkling water (optional) for a fizzy version; add after shaking

Instructions

  • Pour coarse sea salt onto a shallow plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of each glass, then dip and twist the rim in the salt to coat evenly. Set aside.
  • Roll limes and oranges on the counter to release more juice, then cut and juice them. Measure out 1 cup lime juice and 1/2 cup orange juice, straining through a fine mesh strainer if you prefer no pulp.
  • Combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan, heat over medium stirring until dissolved, then cool to room temperature. Alternatively, use agave nectar straight from the bottle.
  • Add lime juice, orange juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker, then fill halfway with ice. Secure the lid tightly.
  • Hold the shaker firmly and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds until the outside feels very cold and you can hear ice moving freely inside.
  • Fill the salt-rimmed glasses with fresh ice, strain the margarita mixture over the ice, and top with a splash of sparkling water if desired. Garnish with a lime wheel and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Always use freshly squeezed lime and orange juice — bottled juice significantly affects the flavor.
  • Start with less simple syrup and add more to taste; it's easy to add sweetness but impossible to remove it.
  • Agave nectar is a great substitute for simple syrup and adds a more authentic Mexican flavor.
  • Chill your glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes before serving for an extra-cold drink.
  • Shake for exactly 15–20 seconds — over-shaking melts the ice and dilutes the drink.
  • Room temperature citrus yields more juice than cold fruit straight from the fridge.
  • Salt-rim glasses no more than 2 hours before serving to prevent sogginess.
  • Make-ahead tip: Mix lime juice, orange juice, and simple syrup up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate; shake with ice just before serving.
  • For a frozen version, blend all ingredients (without sparkling water) with 2–3 cups ice until smooth and slushy.
  • Try fun variations: blend in 1 cup strawberries, mango, or watermelon, or muddle jalapeño slices for a spicy kick.
